My friend Skye came to visit me last weekend and we had the most jam-packed, fun weekend ever. It totally kicked my ass but it was totally worth it. We did so much but one of my favorite things we did was stumbling upon Makers Kit on Melrose. It was the most serendipitous thing and l am so happy we found it, so now I feel like that I have to tell the whole world about this place!
So basically Makers Kit is an awesome DIY shop that specializes in terrariums but also does a bunch of other cool kits and DIY projects. When you first walk in, you feel like you are getting a much needed breath of fresh air. There is so much greenery everywhere and it is so bright and airy that you almost feel lighter. Once you regain consciousness from all the extra oxygen and if you decided to build a terrarium (which you will), you get to float around and pick everything out that you want for your masterpiece; from the vase (how badass is that skull vase?!), to the succulents and air plants, to the color of moss and even the color of rocks. When you get everything you want together (be warned, you'll want everything) they will get you all set up at their assembly table and one of their very helpful staff members will walk you through the building process. It was so much fun and I am OBSESSED with the final product . Living in a small apartment in the middle of LA, I don't really get the opportunity to garden or plant anything. So it was so nice to be able to get my hands dirty and plant some straight up nature. The smell of the soil and the feeling of the moss between my fingers was so therapeutic. It made it even more special to do this with one of my best friends. This is definitely of fun group activity, so good thing Makers Kit does group classes, workshops and private parties.
Seriously you guys, next time you are in Los Angeles, you have to visit this place. It is a million times better than that wine and paint by numbers thing that everyone else it doing. You will actually want to put the finished product on display in your home, instead of tucked away in a closet somewhere never the see the light of day again. I will definitely be bringing more of my friends here to make terrariums. You can never have too many, right? (they're going to call me the crazy terrarium lady, aren't they?)
